The Prince, who watched all of this from his carriage, steps in to save the day. He had been on a long search for his wife by going from house to house but he could not find her. He decided to hold a ball so that he could meet all the eligible women in the kingdom and find his wife. Cinderella's father arrives and she asks for a pair of shoes from her stepmother. The stepmother goes to get the shoes, but notices there are none in the house because Cinderella's father spent all their money to buy food. She does not believe him and forces him to sell his personal belongings. He squanders all his money, but still cannot raise enough money for a pair of shoes. Then he takes a piece of leather from his old boots to make a new pair for Cinderella, but her stepmother cruelly ruins them while making them into slippers by cutting off the toes. At the ball, Cinderella is given leave from her chores by her stepmother so that she can attend the ball and meet the prince again.
